The Worst Proposal Ever
The Proposal movie was a heartfelt comedy drama, also called a dramedy, that had elements of romance, suspense, and intrigue. It is the story of a high-powered business executive that must marry one of her underlings to stay employed in the United States. Because she’s from Canada, she has to get married to an American to be able to stay in the United States. She has formerly mistreated her underling so this makes for an amusing storyline. The underling employee takes the high-powered business executive up to see his family, and this makes for an amusing adventure. He has some newfound power over her now that he has the leverage of the forced marriage proposal. That is why this best comedy movie is called The Proposal.
This is one romantic comedy where Sandra Bullock is in a role that she is not normally in, and that is in a position of power over her romantic interest. She is usually placed in stories where she is working underneath her male boss and inadvertently enters into a relationship with him, like Two Weeks Notice. Sandra Bullock is expanding her career profile by entering into a role like this, and it no doubt creates a new breed of romantic comedy where the romantic comedy is heightened as a result of the mismatched power structure in the relationship.
The interactions between the family members and the underling are also another element of humor to the movie. Outside of the romantic aspect of the movie, there are humorous anecdotes, strained relations, and interesting moments between members of the family, and the juxtaposition of a high-powered business executive in the countryside is also quite funny because she has none of the supplies, know-how, or materials to succeed in a natural environment, but she is forced to go along because her underling requests it.
Her underling is played by Ryan Reynolds. There are also appearances by Mary Steenburgen, Craig T. Nelson, and Betty White to present the illusion of a good ensemble cast. These tried and true actors are great additions to the plot, storyline, and humor with their subtle nuances, actors’ touches, and personal flourishes that make the whole film worth watching. Most users rate it a 7 out of 10 on internet polling websites, and it was nominated for a Golden Globe with another couple of wins and nominations to boot. This is no paltry romantic comedy.
