Not So Funny People

Funny People is a movie that is about Adam Sandler dying. That is the gist of it. He plays a character that is a real life biopic of him, and he does well in portraying his pathos, dejectedness, sense of being lost, alienation, and worthlessness at a life only lived for humor and material possessions. He tries to mend relationships, create new friendships, and spend time with old friends all before commencing to go down to his death. However, he learns that he is not dying and reverts back to his old ways. He ends up alienating a new friend in the process and worsens relations with his ex-wife and family, but it all turns out for the best as he mends the relationship with his friend at the end and is healthy, spritely, and successful again at the end.

The storyline is a morality play with a lack of a moral lesson. It fails to make us laugh and fails to make us cry. It is a tribute to nihilism. There are some funny jokes throughout the movie, but most don’t rise above the level of bad stand-up comedy. This is all understandable because the directory, Judd Apatow, has stated that he hates comedy.

However, the movie was critically acclaimed, and most users rated it a 7. It is a comedy drama so it is understandable that it is not funny throughout. If you look at it as a drama, then you will be pleasantly surprised by the comedy. Funny in the title, however, is misleading, and makes people think they are getting a funny movie. The writer and director was the same person, Judd Apatow, so it really crafts a vision of exactly what he thinks, wants to portray, and have us see the world as.

The cast is composed of Adam Sandler, Seth Rogen, Leslie Mann, Eric Bana, Jonah Hill, and Jason Schwartzman. These characters comprise the humorous aspects of the film through their generally funny demeanor even when they’re not saying something funny. That is what makes this film so deceptively funny even when it is not trying to be. The majority of the characters are stand-up comedians so it is kind of interesting to see them at work on stage. Overall, the movie was a good one, but it has to be watched with the right attitude in mind.

Even though Funny People can’t be funny throughout the whole movie, it is still one of the best comedy movies around.
